Runway Diaries: New York Fashion Week 2025

Nueva York, septiembre de 2025 — La ciudad que nunca duerme olía a glamour, telas extravagantes y tacones imposibles. El fotógrafo y editor de HYDROPONIC MAGAZINE, Andrés Valverde, junto a su asistente Karla Arce, viajaron a Nueva York para cubrir gracias a Runway 7 una edición de la Fashion Week que no solo celebró la moda, sino también la diversidad, la audacia y la visión hacia el futuro.

Desde el momento en que cruzamos las puertas de Sony Hall, supimos que algo diferente estaba pasando. Runway 7 no es solo un desfile más; es un cruce de culturas, una galería viviente de talento que abarca desde Latinoamérica hasta Europa y Asia. En esta novena edición, participaron más de 130 diseñadores, incluyendo 28 marcas latinoamericanas de países como Argentina, México y Colombia, junto con propuestas innovadoras de Japón, Reino Unido y Portugal.

Estilo, diversidad y storytelling

Una de las cosas que más llamó mi atención fue cómo cada diseñador contó una historia diferente sin necesidad de palabras. En una pasarela puedes sentir la herencia cultural, la experimentación en tejidos, los contrastes entre lo artesanal y lo tecnológico. Hay vestidos que parecen susurrar con encaje y crochet, otras piezas que gritan con colores neón, plumas o cortes arquitectónicos. Runway 7 abrazó lo prêt-à-porter, lo couture y lo experimental con la misma pasión.

Momentos que brillaron

• La presencia latinoamericana se sintió fuerte: marcas que traen la raíces, los colores de su tierra, los patrones tradicionales reinterpretados con pinceladas contemporáneas. FashionUnited

• Backstage vibrando: maquillaje que huye de la perfección, peinados atrevidos, el murmullo de las modelos antes de salir, los últimos ajustes... todo eso contribuye al hechizo.

• Influencias globales: no solo vimos la moda de Nueva York, sino ecos de culturas diversas, combinaciones inesperadas (tejidos tradicionales con cortes futuristas, bordados clásicos con estampados digitales).

Reflexiones de Carrie

Mientras caminaba por los pasillos alfombrados, me preguntaba: ¿qué define una temporada como inolvidable? ¿Es la celebridad en la primera fila? ¿El hashtag viral? ¿O el latido que sientes cuando la luz se atenúa y la música empieza, y sabes que lo que está por venir te va a cambiar un poco?

Runway 7 me convenció de que lo más memorable es la autenticidad. La valentía de los diseñadores que arriesgan, que sacan lo que llevamos dentro —nuestras raíces, nuestras dudas, nuestros sueños— a la pasarela. Me recordó que la moda no es solo lo que llevas, sino lo que eres cuando lo llevas.

Dato Curioso

Al terminar nuestra cobertura de la semana de la moda, la vida nos recordó que no todo está bajo control. Perdimos nuestro vuelo de regreso a Costa Rica. Y en ese instante de frustración entendimos lo que Sigmund Freud alguna vez señaló: el inconsciente siempre encuentra la forma de revelarse, sobre todo cuando creemos que todo lo tenemos previsto.

El retraso, la carrera contra el tiempo y la imposibilidad de controlar cada detalle fueron una metáfora perfecta de la moda misma: detrás de cada puntada impecable hay caos, ansiedad y deseo. Freud diría que la pérdida del vuelo no fue solo un accidente logístico, sino la materialización de una verdad más profunda: a veces, lo que evitamos o lo que no planeamos nos empuja a detenernos, a observar y a aceptar que la vida —como la moda— es un equilibrio entre el orden y el desorden, entre lo consciente y lo inconsciente.

Quizá Nueva York quiso recordarnos que, al igual que en la pasarela, lo inesperado también puede ser parte del espectáculo.

Y esto es apenas el inicio de nuestra cobertura en HYDROPONIC MAGAZINE. A partir de ahora, publicaremos las fotografías de pasarela y, después, nuestro esperado especial de street style desde las calles de Nueva York.

New York, September 2025 — The city that never sleeps smelled of glamour, extravagant fabrics, and sky-high heels. This time, the story was told from the inside: photographer and editor of HYDROPONIC MAGAZINE, Andrés Valverde, together with his assistant Karla Arce, traveled to New York to cover, thanks to Runway 7, a Fashion Week edition that celebrated not just fashion, but also diversity, boldness, and a forward-looking vision.

The moment we walked through the doors of Sony Hall, we knew something different was happening. Runway 7 isn’t just another show; it’s a crossroads of cultures, a living gallery of talent spanning Latin America, Europe, and Asia. In its ninth edition, over 130 designers participated, including 28 Latin American brands from Argentina, Mexico, Colombia, along with innovative offerings from Japan, the UK, and Portugal.

Style, diversity, and storytelling

One of the things that struck us most was how each designer told a different story without uttering a single word. On the runway you could feel cultural heritage, experimentation in fabrics, contrasts between craft and technology. There were dresses that seemed to whisper with lace and crochet; others screamed in neon colors, feathers or architectural cuts. Runway 7 embraced ready-to-wear, couture, and experimental with equal passion.

Moments that shined

• The Latin American presence felt strong: brands bringing roots, the colors of their land, traditional patterns reinterpreted with contemporary strokes.

• Backstage buzzing: makeup avoiding perfection, daring hair, models whispering before stepping out, last-minute fittings… all of it contributing to the enchantment.

• Global influences: we didn’t just see New York fashion, but echoes of diverse cultures, unexpected combinations (traditional fabrics with futuristic cuts, classic embroidery with digital prints).

Carrie’s reflections

As we walked down the carpeted halls, we wondered: what makes a season unforgettable? Is it the celebrity in the front row? The viral hashtag? Or the pulse you feel when the lights dim and the music starts, and you just know that what comes next will change you a little?

Runway 7 convinced us that what’s most memorable is authenticity. The courage of designers who dare, who pull from inside —our roots, our doubts, our dreams— and send it down the runway. It reminded us that fashion is not just what you wear, but who you become when you wear it.

Fittingly, as our Fashion Week coverage came to an end, life reminded us that not everything can be controlled. We missed our flight back to Costa Rica. In that frustrating moment, we realized what Sigmund Freud once suggested: the unconscious always finds a way to reveal itself, especially when we think we have everything planned.

The delay, the rush against time, and the inability to control every detail became the perfect metaphor for fashion itself: behind every flawless stitch there is chaos, anxiety, and desire. Freud would say that missing the flight wasn’t just a logistical mishap, but the manifestation of a deeper truth: sometimes, what we avoid or fail to plan pushes us to pause, to observe, and to accept that life —like fashion— is a balance between order and disorder, between the conscious and the unconscious.

Perhaps New York simply wanted to remind us that, just like on the runway, the unexpected can also be part of the show.
